German Telekom on the Rise: T-Systems Wins Gaia X Project for ID Wallet Solutions

Telekom will develop a wallet for the provision of digital identity proofs for the European cloud project "Gaia X".

T-Systems evolves into a key player in the market for digital identities. In the future, the company will provide an "ID Wallet" for digital identity verification in the European cloud project "Gaia X", as announced by the Deutsche Telekom subsidiary in Berlin on Wednesday. The client for this major project is the eco Association of the Internet Industry, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs.

Furthermore, T-Systems was commissioned to develop an ID solution specifically for the tax consultant industry, on behalf of Datev, a company specializing in business software. With these two projects, T-Systems will play a crucial role in the development of digital identities.

The company had previously been commissioned by the health insurance company Barmer to provide the digital wallet of T-Systems and the login service Verimi for its 8.7 million insured. This solution was officially approved by Gematik, a company controlled by the Federal Ministry of Health, two months ago.

With T-Systems ID solutions, the identification is based on the electronic identity card ("ePerso"). Since this cannot be loaded directly onto most smartphones, the ID data is stored by T-Systems in a cloud solution on the internet, which is strictly encrypted. With this system, not only can individuals be digitally identified, but also organizations and networked machines.

T-Systems CEO Adel Al-Saleh emphasized that it is the EU's goal for citizens to be able to decide sovereignly with whom they want to share their data. "Digital, secure identities are the key to this," he explained. They would enable new digital applications in many industries.

The "Gaia X" project was launched in 2019 with great promises at the digital summit of the then federal government. The goal is to create a networked system that connects many providers and users of data and cloud services, instead of developing a large, standalone European cloud solution. Even though not all goals of "Gaia X" have been achieved yet, certain individual solutions that were extracted from the project are considered flagship projects. This includes "Catena X", the cloud of car manufacturers.

At the stock exchange, Deutsche Telekom's share showed an increase of 0.61 percent to 20.60 euros via XETRA on Wednesday.

The projects of T-Systems in the field of digital identities reflect the necessity and trend of secure and efficient digital identity management. With "Gaia X" and other future-oriented solutions, T-Systems is becoming a key player in the market for digital identities. The company thus plays a decisive role in the further development and protection of digital identities not only of individuals, but also of companies and networked devices.
