The Increasing Threat of Cyber Attacks on German Companies Has Attracted New Attention

Bernhard Rohleder, the CEO of the digital association Bitkom, reported a concerning increase in attacks, particularly from Russia and China. "Last year we observed a doubling of the attacks from Russia and an increase of 50 percent in incidents from China," Rohleder explained on the ZDF morning show. About 80 percent of the affected companies were harmed by Russian cyber activities.

The growing cyber threats affect not only the private sector but also critical infrastructures such as energy supply and hospitals. The annual total damage from cyberattacks in Germany is estimated at 148 billion euros. According to Rohleder, these attacks are often carried out by organized criminals and foreign intelligence services that want to either achieve financial gains or cause significant damage.

On the same topic, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser, together with the President of the Federal Criminal Police Office, Holger Münch, will present the current "Federal Situation Report on Cybercrime 2023" in Wiesbaden. This report confirms the trend of an increasing number of cyber offenses committed from outside Germany and an increase in the associated damage amounts.
