Amazon: Multi-million defeat in patent dispute

Amazon Ordered to Pay Mega Settlement: Half a Billion Dollar Due for Patent Dispute Over Data Storage Technologies.

Amazon was ordered to pay over half a billion dollars in a patent dispute.

Jury in Chicago decided that the online giant infringed three patents of the company Kove in its cloud division AWS, and awarded the plaintiff 525 million dollars.

Amazon plans to appeal against the verdict and emphasizes that no changes to AWS services are necessary, as the affected patents have since expired. Patent lawsuits in the US often end with high claims for damages, which are frequently reduced in subsequent proceedings.

"Kove had argued that their technologies were crucial for the storage and retrieval of large amounts of data at AWS and had already been developed long before the establishment of cloud services."

Despite the legal dispute, Amazon stock saw a slight increase on the NASDAQ.
