Zalando Responds: Misleading Sustainability Labels Removed from Website Following EU Pressure.

The Online Retailer Zalando Commits to Removing Misleading Sustainability Labels and Symbols from Its Website

According to the European Commission, from April 15, 2024, symbols such as leaves or trees will no longer appear next to the products offered. This agreement was announced on Thursday by the Brussels authority.

Zalando Targeted by the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network (CPC) Already in 2022, Coordinated by the European Commission. Current labels are to be replaced with clear information about the specific product. This includes, for example, the percentage of recycled materials. In addition, the company’s "sustainability page" is to be revised with the introduction of two new webpages: one with further information on the product standards and another with information on Zalando's sustainability-related approaches and strategies.

According to EU law, companies must provide consumers with truthful information and must not mislead them in order to influence their decisions. To ensure that Zalando meets its obligations, the company must present a report that documents the implementation of the measures. An independent group of consumer protectors, also coordinated by the European Commission, will review this report. In the event of any deficiencies, there is the possibility that fines may be imposed.

Previously, products at Zalando were labeled with specific symbols that met the company's sustainability criteria. These included symbols for ecological or innovative materials, natural ingredients, or products not tested on animals. This agreement also affects Zalando's stock, which temporarily fell by 1.03 percent to 19.30 euros via XETRA.
