Mondi Strengthens Market Position with Acquisition of Schumacher Packaging's Western Europe Business

The sustainability-focused packaging specialist Mondi announces the acquisition of Schumacher Packaging's Western European packaging operations. With an enterprise value of 634 million Euros, the acquisition primarily includes corrugated converting and solid board operations in Germany, the Benelux countries, and the United Kingdom. This strategic acquisition strengthens Mondi's corrugated competence in Western Europe and expands its product range in the e-commerce and FMCG sectors. It is part of Mondi's efforts to expand its European corrugated packaging division and create innovative added value for customers. Andrew King, CEO of the Mondi Group, emphasizes the focus on investments to meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions. The new sites provide a significant expansion of converting capacities and offer opportunities for vertical integration gains in the region. Overall, the transaction includes seven corrugated plants, two solid board mills, and four solid board converting facilities, increasing the capacity of Mondi’s plants in Central and Eastern Europe by over one billion square feet. Particularly noteworthy are the high-performance mega-box plants in Ebersdorf and Greven, Germany, which are known for their production efficiency. A significant increase in EBITDA is expected in the coming years for the acquired Western European facilities of Schumacher Packaging, not least due to optimized capacity utilization and synergy effects amounting to 22 million Euros. The completion of the acquisition, still subject to regulatory approvals, is expected in the first half of 2025. The previous co-CEOs of Schumacher Packaging, Bjoern and Hendrik Schumacher, will remain on board and will support Mondi's growth strategically in an advisory capacity and operationally in a leading role. This measure is part of a comprehensive strategy for administrative simplification and promotion of future-proof business models.
