Economie en politiek

Belangrijkste spil in Zuidoost-Azië. Singapore behoort tot de rijkste landen ter wereld, maar heeft nauwelijks land of hulpbronnen. Het land is een stadstaat en daarmee de kleinste staat in Zuidoost-Azië.

Singapore staat voor economisch vrij denken, lage belastingen, beperkte regulering en een onafhankelijk beleid. Bovendien heerst er in Singapore het bankgeheim, wat alles bij elkaar zeer aantrekkelijk is voor buitenlandse investeerders en vermogende personen. Wat Zwitserland of de Kaaimaneilanden bieden, is nu ook in het centrum van Zuidoost-Azië te vinden.

Het land beschikt daarnaast over een van de grootste havens en overslagplaatsen van de hele regio, waardoor enorm veel transportbedrijven deze locatie zowel vanuit economisch als geografisch perspectief benutten. Het bijzondere is dat er geen invoerrechten zijn en de haven voor alle naties openstaat.

De aandelenmarkt in Singapore wordt sterk gedomineerd door vermogensbeheer, wat samenhangt met het uitstekende fiscale klimaat. De belangrijkste index (Straits Times Index) bestaat voor 50% uit financiële aandelen, wat voortkomt uit de hoge kapitaalinstroom in de afgelopen jaren. Sectoren zoals industrie of vastgoed beslaan een verdere 35%, waardoor technologie of consumptie zeer beperkt vertegenwoordigd is.

De grootste bedrijven

E-commerce neemt de plaats in van financiële bedrijven. Momenteel staat het e-commerce en gaming bedrijf SEA Limited bovenaan de lijst van grootste bedrijven met een marktkapitalisatie van 100 miljard USD. Daarna volgen de drie grootste banken van het land: DBS, die bekend staat als de meest digitale en geavanceerde bank van Zuidoost-Azië, OCBC en UOB.

De Straits Times Index (STI)

Eenzijdige weging in de leidende index. In de STI bevinden zich in totaal de 30 grootste bedrijven uit Singapore, die op de Singapore Exchange (SGX) worden verhandeld. Om in de index opgenomen te worden, moet een bedrijf financieel daadkrachtig zijn en een hoge liquiditeit hebben.

Vanwege de stabiele financiële positie en de hoge marktkapitalisatie van de banken, zijn deze met ongeveer 50% in de index gewogen, wat natuurlijk niet leidt tot een behoorlijke sectordiversificatie. Verder neemt de industriesector met bijna 20% ook een behoorlijke plaats in. Hier zijn bedrijven zoals Keppel of Wilmar vertegenwoordigd.

De vastgoedsector is ook sterk vertegenwoordigd. Bedrijven zoals CapitalLand of Ascendas zijn toonaangevende Reits in Singapore voor zowel particuliere als commerciële vastgoedbeheer. Met Singapore Telecommunications is er ook een mobiele serviceprovider die zeer zwaar in de index weegt en die de nummer één is in tal van Aziatische landen.

Beurs en openingstijden.

Belangrijke handelsplek in Azië. De Singapore Exchange (SGX) ontstond in 1999 uit een fusie van twee beurzen en werd in het jaar 2000 ook verhandelbaar als aandeel, net zoals de Nasdaq. De handelsplaats is een van de belangrijkste in Zuidoost-Azië door het hoge aantal aandelen en derivaten die genoteerd zijn.

Met een marktkapitalisatie van 663 miljard USD haalt de SGX het weliswaar niet tot de lijst van grootste beurzen, maar het is toch opmerkelijk hoe groot ze is als je bedenkt hoe klein het land eigenlijk is.

De beurs in Singapore opent om 3:00 uur onze tijd in Duitsland. Sluit om 6:30 uur en heeft dan een tweede handelsperiode van 8:00 tot 11:00 uur. Bij veel Aziatische beurzen is er een pauze tijdens de middag.
