Carlos Watson, a former talk show host, was sentenced to nearly ten years in prison on Monday. Central to the case is his role in a financial conspiracy, which exposed the once-promising company Ozy Media as an example of the 'fake it till you make it' culture in the startup sector.
In an especially audacious incident, another Ozy executive allegedly impersonated a YouTube manager to pitch the company to investment banks, reportedly under Watson's guidance, according to the prosecution. Despite last summer's conviction for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, Watson continues to deny the charges and plans to appeal.
During the sentencing, Watson complained about being the target of 'selective prosecution' as an African American entrepreneur in the minority-underrepresented Silicon Valley. He called the case 'a modern lynching' and apologized to the victims, but emphasized that he believed the circumstances were unfair.
Judge Eric Komitee noted that the extent of the deceit was exceptionally high and criticized Watson's inability to distinguish truth from deception. The prosecution accused Watson of deceiving investors with fictitious revenues and agreements to maintain the impression of Ozy's success.
During the trial, Watson's defense blamed others, particularly co-founder Samir Rao and former chief of staff Suzee Han, both of whom were found guilty of fraud and testified against Watson.
Until his incarceration on March 28, Watson remains free on a $3 million bond. The amount of restitution will be determined at a hearing in February. Modern Financial Markets Data
