The political dynamics in Australia are revitalizing as the conservative opposition coalition has, for the first time since the May 2022 election, surpassed the Labor government in poll ratings. According to a recent Newspoll survey conducted for The Australian newspaper, the Liberal-National Coalition is now leading the Labor Party 51 to 49 under the Australian preferential voting system. This shift in poll ratings is noteworthy, as the primary voter support for both parties remains steady at 38 to 31. The slight lead for the opposition results from an increased preference shift in favor of smaller parties. Despite this development, the survey predicts a deadlock in Parliament. Therefore, a continuation of the Labor minority government remains the more likely scenario. These survey results come at an unfavorable time for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who is struggling despite numerous relief measures for families facing high living costs and interest rates. The headline inflation rate fell to 2.7% in August, within the Reserve Bank of Australia's target range of 2 to 3%. Nevertheless, the central bank maintains its assessment that this is a temporary development. Interest rates have remained at 4.35% since November last year, although the RBA recently slightly softened its previous tight stance. In light of the latest poll ratings, Albanese is experiencing a decline in his popularity: his approval rating fell to 40%, while dissatisfaction rose by three points to 54%. Opposition leader Peter Dutton scores with a slightly lower disapproval rate of 52% in the survey.
