The renowned Italian financial institution Intesa Sanpaolo, known as Italy's largest bank, is facing a significant security incident. According to recent reports, the incident was so serious that even Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is among the affected individuals. The explosive affair came to light when the newspaper "Domani" reported that an employee of Intesa Sanpaolo was dismissed after unlawfully accessing bank accounts of thousands of customers, including high-profile figures such as Meloni. In a statement, Intesa Sanpaolo emphasized that the employee's behavior "gravely violated laws, regulations, and internal guidelines." The bank promptly reported the breach, dismissed the employee, and initiated legal action. It apologized for the incident and assured that such occurrences must not happen again. Giorgia Meloni confirmed the incident in an interview with the TG5 news program and expressed her expectation that the judiciary would thoroughly investigate the incident and any potential backgrounds. She highlighted the issue that there are individuals in both the public and private sectors who illegally collect and resell information. However, the central question remains to whom these confidential pieces of information are sold and what interests they serve. To decisively counter the issue, Intesa Sanpaolo plans to appoint Antonio De Vita, a retired senior officer of the Carabinieri, to oversee the company's cybersecurity and security services over the weekend. This step is intended to regain customer trust and strengthen security at Intesa Sanpaolo.
