Kareem Hunt returned to the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday morning, the team where he once rose to NFL stardom. At the Chiefs' training center, the 29-year-old running back met with Coach Andy Reid, General Manager Brett Veach, and Quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This trio had not anticipated reuniting with Hunt after his release in 2018. Mahomes warmly welcomed Hunt, highlighting a deep friendship between them. Hunt was a former free agent when the Chiefs defeated the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Late in the fourth quarter, as starting running back Isiah Pacheco broke his right fibula, an unexpected opportunity opened for Hunt's return. Discussions between Hunt and the Chiefs began on Monday morning. During practice, Hunt demonstrated his fitness and took accountability for his past mistakes. He signed the contract on Tuesday evening and posted an Instagram video featuring his highlights from a 2018 game against the Denver Broncos. Hunt changed his jersey number to 29 and will need time to acclimate to the team and the playbook. Coach Reid plans to integrate Hunt into the team gradually. Once selected by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2017 draft, Hunt shone as a rookie with 1,327 rushing yards. However, his career took an abrupt turn when a video surfaced showing him shoving and kicking a woman, leading to his release in November 2018. After serving an eight-game suspension, Hunt spent five years with the Cleveland Browns, recording 2,285 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns. Reid emphasized that people deserve second chances and hopes that Hunt has matured. Hunt had a challenging year with the Browns, accumulating only 495 all-purpose yards in 15 games, but Reid noted that Hunt continued to show promise. Throughout his time in Cleveland, Hunt remained friends with Mahomes, who supported him in every way. On Wednesday, Pacheco underwent surgery to repair his broken bone. In the interim, rookie Carson Steele and veteran Samaje Perine are expected to fill the gap. Steele's performance in the last game, despite fumbling once, showed potential and a willingness to learn. Looking ahead, Reid hopes that Pacheco can return in time for the game against the Los Angeles Chargers on December 9, reminiscent of how Terrell Owens played in Super Bowl XXXIX after a significant injury.
