Thaksin Shinawatra becomes Anwar Ibrahim's personal advisor at ASEAN chairmanship

The Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has appointed former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra as his personal advisor when he assumes the chairmanship of the Southeast Asian Nation Association ASEAN next year. Thaksin, known for his political dominance and influence, will serve in an informal capacity, supported by advisors from several ASEAN member states. This announcement was made during the visit of Thaksin's youngest daughter, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, to Malaysia. She is already the fourth member of the Shinawatra family to hold Thailand's highest political position. Anwar emphasized the importance of benefiting from Thaksin's experience as a statesman during a joint press conference with Paetongtarn. Although Thaksin is officially barred from government positions due to convictions for abuse of office and conflicts of interest, his influence on Thai politics remains unbroken. Following his dramatic return from self-imposed exile in August 2023 and a short prison sentence, Thaksin is once again active on the political scene. His role as an advisor is particularly noteworthy given his efforts to mediate in Myanmar's complex political situation. The Thai Foreign Minister confirmed Thaksin's meeting with opposition members of the Myanmar military government in May. Thaksin's involvement in the ruling Pheu Thai Party and his ongoing discussions with regional leaders demonstrate that despite his declared withdrawal from politics, he continues to exert decisive influence.
