Modern technology makes it possible to withdraw cash from ATMs without physical cards. This is facilitated by so-called Cardless ATMs. Instead of inserting a card, customers use their mobile device to initiate a transaction. In a world where smartphones are ubiquitous, these ATMs offer a convenient solution for spontaneous cash withdrawals—even if one has forgotten their wallet. However, despite the obvious advantages, cardless ATMs are not yet available at all banks. Those who want to familiarize themselves with this innovative technology should learn how it works and understand its advantages and disadvantages. A cardless ATM allows cash withdrawals without the need for a physical debit or bank card. Instead, users access their account via their mobile phone or a bank app. All these transactions are identical to those at traditional ATMs; the only difference lies in access to account information. In their operation, cardless ATMs rely on technologies also used in other contactless payments. To use a cardless ATM, customers typically need to follow a few standardized steps. Despite the many benefits, there are also some security concerns that should be considered. A major advantage of this new technology is increased security. Without a physical card to insert, fraudsters have little chance of accessing data. Additionally, cardless ATMs often employ multi-factor authentication or biometric checks, making unauthorized access more difficult. One-time codes sent by the bank to initiate a transaction usually have a short validity period, offering further protection. Nevertheless, cardless ATMs also pose some risks. If the necessary security measures are lacking on the mobile device, strangers can relatively easily access bank accounts—without the physical presence of a bank card. Several prominent banks already offer cardless ATMs. Examples include Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Capital One, and Fifth Third Bank. In addition to major banks, some credit unions such as Michigan First Credit Union and First Commerce Credit Union have also incorporated this service into their portfolios. Nevertheless, this technology is not yet widely available; smaller banks and credit unions often lag behind.
