The Detroit Red Wings have resolved a key personnel issue before the start of training camp: Lucas Raymond, the 22-year-old star forward, signed an eight-year contract on Monday evening with an annual salary of $8.075 million.
This contract extension secures the retention of one of the team's most important players and allows for long-term planning regarding the salary budget. Raymond will thus remain a Red Wing until the age of 30, encompassing the prime phase of his career. The contract also prevents the Red Wings from beginning training without their leading scorer from the past season, having narrowly missed the playoffs.
Lucas Raymond proved himself as a valuable offensive player last season. With 31 goals and 72 points, he demonstrated why he is considered a future top scorer. Particularly impressive was his performance in the final games of the season, shining with a hat trick against Pittsburgh and decisive goals against Montreal. His nine points in five crucial games underscored his potential to be a key performer under pressure and possibly one of the NHL's top left-wingers this season.
Why does a long-term contract make sense? In the NHL, offensive skills are highly rewarded, and Raymond's potential suggests that even more goals and points will follow. If he maintains his performance at even last season’s level, the contract should be a good deal given a rising salary cap. Should Raymond take the next step and become one of the league's top point scorers, the contract could become a real bargain.
Of course, a long-term contract carries a certain risk, mainly depending on whether Raymond maintains or improves his performance. However, given his past successes, there are justified hopes that he will. The trend toward such long-term contracts for players of his caliber shows that the Red Wings are betting on a promising future.
Regarding the $8.075 million per year, Raymond's valuation was tricky. His past performances surpass those of Ottawa's Tim Stützle when he signed his lucrative contract. Simultaneously, Raymond's new compensation is slightly above Carolina’s Seth Jarvis, reflecting his potential and past successes.
The next crucial step for Detroit is the extension with Moritz Seider, another young key player. Following recent extensions, the Red Wings still have a salary cap space of around $8.74 million, which should be sufficient to bind Seider long term.
The exciting question remains: Will Seider's new contract surpass the salary of captain Dylan Larkin, currently the team's highest-paid player at $8.7 million?
