After an attack by Yemeni Houthi rebels on the tanker Sounion in the Red Sea earlier this month, a potential oil spill extending over 2.2 nautical miles was discovered.
An image from the European Maritime Safety Agency shows the potential oil spill at a location consistent with the position of the damaged ship, as explained by the Director General for Shipping in Greece in a letter dated August 29.
The document, circulated by the United Nations maritime agency on Friday, confirms that the position of the oil spill matches the position of the affected ship.
