The rectangular shape of the classic smartphone no longer seems contemporary to many users. Even seasoned tech reviewers are seeking innovative alternatives. Consequently, foldable smartphones are increasingly emerging as promising candidates. These devices, which can be opened like a book, have garnered significant attention from manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola, and Huawei since their debut in 2019. Initially, they remained niche products, hampered by software and durability issues as well as high prices exceeding $1,500. However, a shift is now becoming apparent. The quality of these devices is steadily improving, and some models are becoming more affordable. According to market research firm IDC, it is expected that 25 million foldable smartphones will be shipped this year—an increase of nearly 40 percent compared to the previous year. After testing two current foldable devices, the $700 Motorola Razr and the $1,800 Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, a clear trend emerges: smartphones with flexible screens will become mainstream in the coming years. Both models address many of the earlier problems. The Motorola Razr impresses with its compact size. When closed, a 3.6-inch external display provides sufficient space for basic functions such as calls, messages, and selfies. Once opened, the Razr transforms into a 6.9-inch smartphone with additional split-screen functionality. The camera performs well in daylight but struggles in low-light conditions. The battery lasts an impressive 36 hours. The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold offers a 6.3-inch display when folded, which is about the size of a standard smartphone. When unfolded, it transforms into an 8-inch tablet, ideal for longer reading or movie sessions. The new version is thinner and lighter, without compromising camera performance or battery life. However, the high price of $1,800 remains a critical issue, making it a luxury product for tech enthusiasts for the time being. Between the two models, the Razr is recommended due to its practical size and lower price. It costs less than the flagship smartphones from Apple and Samsung and is also easy to transport—ideal for a modern lifestyle. Personally, however, there remains a preference for the iPhone system, raising the consideration of a foldable iPhone. Early rumors suggest that Apple is already working on a foldable iPad, which could pave the way for a foldable iPhone. There are no official comments from Apple on this. Nonetheless, the future of foldable displays seems inevitable.
