The multinational food company Mondelēz International has announced plans to use recycled plastic from advanced recycling technologies for packaging its Triscuit crackers in the USA and Canada. This initiative aligns with the company's goal of incorporating approximately 5% recycled plastic into its packaging by 2025. The brand is participating in a pioneering initiative to enhance packaging sustainability by sourcing recycled plastics through the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC)-certified mass balance approach. As part of this initiative, Mondelēz International will use up to 50% plastic from advanced recycling technologies in the inner liners of its bag-in-box packaging. This measure complements the current use of 100% recycled cardboard for the outer packaging of Triscuit products, of which 35% consists of post-consumer recycled material. The innovation not only supports a circular economy for packaging in North America but also positions the brand as a leader in reducing plastic waste. This sustainable packaging initiative is expected to keep more than one million pounds of plastic waste from landfills annually. Consumers can now find the new Triscuit packaging in supermarkets in the USA and Canada. Mondelēz International collaborated with Berry Global and LyondellBasell for this initiative. Lou Fenech, Research Officer for Packaging Sustainability at Mondelēz International, said, "We believe sourcing material linked to advanced recycling technologies (mass balance) can send a signal to the entire industry and promote the collection, sorting, and processing of more plastic waste." "We continuously strive to improve our packaging to support a circular economy for packaging. We do this by reducing and advancing the packaging, enhancing systems, and leveraging innovative partnerships." On its sustainability journey, the Triscuit brand has focused on sourcing wheat sustainably, improving environmental metrics on farms, and supporting the Joint Monarch Venture for butterfly conservation. Additionally, the brand contributed $100,000 to Michigan State University's agricultural program in 2023.
