The political landscape of New York is experiencing quite a shake-up after a survey by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion revealed that only 26 percent of residents are satisfied with Mayor Eric Adams' performance. The poll, conducted following his indictment on charges of bribery and corruption, reveals a widespread demand from 69 percent of New Yorkers, including 71 percent of Democrats, for his resignation. Notably, even a majority of the African American population, traditionally part of Adams' political base, is turning away from him. Fifty-nine percent want him out of office, while only 39 percent advocate for the continuation of his term. Criticism of Eric Adams' tenure has grown significantly: in November of last year, his approval rating was still at 37 percent. Now, 47 percent of respondents categorically reject his performance. Adams, who pleaded not guilty last week, is among other accusations, accused of accepting bribes from Turkey. Governor Kathy Hochul is also being pressured to take action should Adams not resign himself. A solid majority of 63 percent of respondents believe that she should initiate impeachment proceedings. Despite his efforts to gain public support, 65 percent of residents are convinced that Adams has engaged in illegal activities. Amidst these upheavals, there is speculation about whether former Governor Andrew M. Cuomo might run for mayor, although 55 percent of New Yorkers oppose this. The political future of the mayor is uncertain, as 81 percent are against a re-election bid next year.
