German Railways Records Deep Red Figures: Billions in Losses Despite High Investments

Eulerpool News·

The fiscal year 2023 comes to a harsh financial close for Deutsche Bahn. A multi-billion loss is the result of various stress factors that troubled the state-owned enterprise. A combination of high expenditures on construction, personnel, and energy, a rising interest rate environment, as well as a wave of strike actions financially crippled the company. In total, the loss amounted to 2.4 billion euros - a considerable leap from the previous year's deficit of 200 million euros. The group's revenues decreased by 13 percent to approximately 45.2 billion euros. But it's not only the net loss that affects Deutsche Bahn; the operational business also slipped deeper into the red. The earnings before interest and taxes (Ebit) saw a significant decline, reaching a deficit of nearly one billion euros – a worrisome reversal compared to the previous year's gain of 1.2 billion euros. The rail operator attributes this deficitary position to extensive pre-financing for crucial infrastructure investments. For these purposes, approximately 7.6 billion euros were expended from its reserves. Federal support is expected to neutralize these expenditures in the current year, making the corporation optimistic about generating profits at least operationally once again. Yet the challenges of the past year extend beyond the financial realm. Overwhelming utilization of many routes and a network that, at many points, requires renovation, pushed the punctuality rate into a concerning state: Only two out of three long-distance trains reached their destinations on time. Nevertheless, the railway remains popular among travelers – with 1.8 billion trips and a 5.8 percent increase from the previous year, it continues to play a central role in the mobility of Germans. The dismal financial results were further exacerbated by economic uncertainties in the cargo division, DB Cargo, and a cooling transport market that notably affected the otherwise strong logistics division, DB Schenker. These developments herald a year that presented challenges across various areas, putting Deutsche Bahn through a stern test.
