Reports suggest that the US government is planning to pursue a ban on Chinese software in vehicles with Level 3 autonomy and above in the coming weeks. Informed sources indicate that this regulation is part of broader measures by President Joe Biden's administration to mitigate national security risks that could arise from connected technologies in autonomous vehicles. The proposed regulation would also prohibit Chinese companies from testing autonomous vehicles on US roads. Vehicles with advanced wireless communication capabilities developed by Chinese firms would also be targeted by the new measure. A spokesperson for the US Department of Commerce expressed concerns on Sunday about the national security risks associated with connected technologies in vehicles. Authorities see a need for action, especially regarding the potential of these technologies to eavesdrop on conversations, record them, or take control of the vehicle. Under the proposal, which was first reported by Reuters, automakers and suppliers would be required to provide evidence that none of their connected vehicles or advanced programs were developed by a "foreign entity of interest," such as China.
