Despite recent tensions over calls for a boycott against its subsidiary P&O Ferries, DP World has confirmed its participation in the international investment summit scheduled by the government for Monday. Previous reports suggested that Dubai-based DP World might reconsider its investment plans worth one billion pounds in the United Kingdom due to sharp criticism from Transport Minister Louise Haigh towards P&O Ferries. The UK Department for Business and Trade confirmed on Saturday the presence of DP World at the summit. However, a statement from the company is still pending. Sir Keir Starmer highlighted that Haigh's call for a boycott against the ferry company did not reflect the official government position. Meanwhile, the chairman of the Business Committee in the House of Commons, Labour MP Liam Byrne, downplayed the confrontation and emphasized the need for new laws to regulate the behavior of companies like P&O in the future. The background of this confrontation lies in the dismissal of 800 British sailors by P&O in March 2022, who were replaced with cheaper labor from abroad. This action received cross-party criticism and led to the introduction of new legislation by Haigh and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner to prevent similar incidents in the future. Haigh repeatedly referred to P&O as a "Rogue Operator" and called for a boycott. Although Sir Keir Starmer is confident that the situation with DP World can be resolved, the incident highlighted the tensions between past and future in the UK business landscape. The upcoming summit is intended to provide a platform to convince investors who are interested in new capital-rich projects in the UK despite past concerns.
