The return of Americans to the Moon is taking more time than initially planned, and costs are rising. Originally announced by President Trump during his first term for the year 2024, the lunar program "Project Artemis" is now further behind schedule. Due to delays and cost overruns in the development of Boeing's Space Launch System (SLS) and safety concerns regarding the Orion space capsule built by Lockheed Martin, the target date has already been postponed to 2026. It is now clear that even this timeline cannot be met.
The successful Artemis I mission in 2022 provided hope: Back then, the unmanned test maneuver of the Orion space capsule via the SLS rocket, despite a safe return to Earth after a lunar orbit, required a reassessment of the heat shield by NASA. The launch of Artemis II, which is supposed to lead a crewed mission into lunar orbit, is now scheduled for April 2026, while Artemis III, which is intended to actually land on the Moon, is delayed until mid-2027.
The additional delays of seven and nine months for Artemis II and III also have financial consequences. A launch of the SLS on an Artemis mission is estimated by billionaire Michael Bloomberg to cost about $4 billion – a figure that some calculations suggest could even rise to $4.1 billion. This makes the Artemis project an extremely lucrative, albeit expensive, endeavor for Boeing and its partners such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and L3Harris. The anticipated revenues could be deferred by a year in light of the project delays, which is significant for the affected publicly traded companies. Modern Financial Markets Data
