The simmering internal conflicts at Chelsea have now come to the public's attention for the first time. A little more than two years after the £2.3 billion acquisition of the club from the sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, the partnership between majority owner Clearlake Capital and co-owner Todd Boehly appears to be unraveling. Rumors of dissatisfaction have been circulating for some time, but specific allegations of a rift between Boehly and Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali had always been denied. Now, following a Bloomberg report that revealed both parties are reviewing their ownership options, all involved have acknowledged the extent of the conflict for the first time. In January last year, Boehly withdrew from day-to-day operations, leaving the sports management to Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart. However, Eghbali remained very active, negotiating record transfers for Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez, among others. Meanwhile, Boehly frequently faced media criticism for his transfer policies and became the target of online memes. A central issue in the dispute lies in the differing leadership styles of the two parties. Boehly, similar to his approach with the Los Angeles Dodgers, prefers to hire specialists and give them free rein, while Eghbali views the club in a way that Boehly perceives as micromanagement. Another point of contention was the dismissal of coach Mauricio Pochettino. Boehly publicly advocated for patience while privately inviting Pochettino to dinner. The final decision to separate was made by Winstanley, Stewart, and Eghbali without a formal veto from Boehly, leading to further tensions. While Clearlake and Boehly have differing visions for the club's long-term goals, both sides have equal voting rights over potential investor offers. This means both retain a certain level of control over the ownership structure. In conclusion, it is clear that the drama surrounding Chelsea's future leadership is far from over. The public airing of these disputes reinforces the sense of instability that has accompanied the club since its sale by Abramovich.
