At an Oracle meeting, company founder Larry Ellison discussed the future role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in law enforcement. He expressed the view that AI could one day drive massive surveillance networks for the police. "We will have oversight," said Ellison. "Every police officer will be monitored at all times, and if there is a problem, the AI will report this problem and forward it to the appropriate person. Citizens will behave better because we are constantly recording and reporting everything that happens." Ellison believes that continuous surveillance by AI could significantly reduce crime. However, the data does not fully support this claim. As the Washington Post notes, police data in the U.S. has historically been biased. Feeding such data into an AI model could lead to the AI suggesting more criminal activities in these areas. This would create racially and socio-economically biased feedback loops. In 2019, the LAPD discontinued its crime prediction program after an audit revealed that it led to increased surveillance of Black and Latino individuals.
