A new chapter in the ongoing struggle over copyrights in the digital world: The New York Times has issued a cease-and-desist letter to the emerging AI company Perplexity. This is intended to compel Perplexity to cease using content from the renowned newspaper, reported the Wall Street Journal recently. Essentially, the media icon accuses the AI firm of violating copyright by summarizing and otherwise processing articles. Neither the New York Times nor Perplexity have yet responded to inquiries from Reuters. The New York Times recently began a similar dispute with the AI giant OpenAI, the maker of the popular chatbot ChatGPT. Late last year, the newspaper filed a lawsuit, accusing OpenAI of using millions of its articles without permission for AI training.
