Under the leadership of Angela Rayner, the Labour Party is planning a comprehensive reform of labor legislation that aims to secure the right for nine million workers to file claims against unjustified dismissals from day one. Previously, employees had to be with a company for at least two years before they could assert these rights. However, the proposed reforms face strong opposition from the business sector. Businesspeople call the plans "chaotic" and fear that the changes could discourage companies from making new hires. Tina McKenzie from the Federation of Small Businesses and Neil Carberry from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation expressed concerns that the reforms could negatively impact the business climate. The planned legislative change, described by the government as the most significant upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation, includes measures such as banning "fire and rehire" practices and limiting zero-hour contracts. Critics like Kevin Hollinrake argue that the measures serve unions more than businesses and describe them as a return to the unionist laws of the 1970s. However, certain elements have been toned down to appease employers. For instance, the probation period for new employees could last up to nine months. Additionally, the government states that it aims to make workplaces more relevant to life and introduce flexible working as the norm. The Labour Party intends to present an Employment Rights Act within the first 100 days of its term. These reforms promise to modernize workplaces and aim to end the economic stagnation of recent years by focusing on innovation and quality rather than competition in the low-wage sector. Despite the criticism, Angela Rayner remains convinced that these legislative changes will promote growth and improve living standards.
