The Turkish grocery delivery service Getir, known for its fast delivery of supermarket products, is reportedly planning a comprehensive withdrawal from the German market as well as other international markets. This is reported by 'Wirtschaftswoche' and 'Business Insider'. Getir, which took over the German competitor Gorillas at the end of 2022, will withdraw completely from Germany by May 15th according to information from the media. Some of the 1800 employees in Germany are said to have received their termination notices at the beginning of this week.
The withdrawal follows the company's decision in the summer of 2023 to cease activities in Spain, Portugal, and Italy and to cut thousands of jobs. Originally, Getir had planned to focus its business in Europe on Germany. However, the ongoing challenges and low margins in a fiercely competitive market, which experienced a boom during the coronavirus pandemic, but in the long term puts many providers under financial pressure, seem to have led to this strategic turnaround.
According to a report, Getir is planning to withdraw from the UK and the Netherlands as well as Germany. Despite a new funding commitment from investors in the tens of millions specifically earmarked for the withdrawal and wind-down in these three markets, there is speculation that the main investor, Mubadala from Abu Dhabi, has scaled back its involvement. Mubadala is also involved in Berlin-based competitor Flink, about whose potential acquisition by Getir there has been recent speculation.
However, in its home country of Turkey, Getir plans to expand its business further. This step underlines the focus on the domestic market, while the company scales back its international ambitions. Despite Getir confirming these plans, the exact future of the company in the affected markets and the impact on the affected employees remains uncertain.
