On Thursday, there were significant disruptions at Terminal 2 of Munich Airport, causing around 750 passengers to miss their flights. Social media was filled with images of extremely long queues at security checkpoints, indicating wait times of several hours.

Airport chief Jost Lammers described the behavior of the passengers as "very unusual" at a Friday afternoon press conference. Many travelers arrived at the airport up to six hours before departure, leading to a concentrated rush. When asked about the sudden early arrivals, Lammers stated that this was "the focus of our analyses" and significantly differed from previous experiences.

Jens Ritter, Head of Passenger Services at Lufthansa, pointed out that the Munich job market is currently particularly challenging. This especially affects the airline's service providers and contributes to the current situation.

The Bavarian state government called for quick solutions to fix the problem. "We want this to be stopped," said government circles. Munich's Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) also expressed dissatisfaction with the airport's performance and called for improvements. The airport is owned 23 percent by the city of Munich, 26 percent by the Federal Republic, and 51 percent by the Free State of Bavaria.

Both the airport and Lufthansa acknowledged the existing problems.

According to the company SGM, which conducts security checks on behalf of the Upper Bavaria government, all checkpoints were operational on Thursday. Overall, approximately 47,000 people had booked flights from Terminal 2 on that day, with around 55 percent of passengers actually having to go through the checks – significantly higher than on other days.
