As a recent survey by the comparison portal Verivox shows, the landline telephone is being used less and less. Only 16.1 percent of users of landline telephone connections at home use it daily, which represents a decrease of 2.6 percentage points compared to the same survey from the previous year.

While some respondents still pick up the phone several times a week or at least several times a month, a significant portion of 30 percent of the 1030 respondents stated that they no longer use a landline phone at all. The decline in the importance of landline phones is particularly evident among younger people, whereas it still holds some relevance for older generations.

Another indication of the declining significance of the landline phone: One in five respondents with a landline connection no longer even knows their own landline number by heart. This trend aligns with data from the Federal Network Agency, which recorded a 20 percent decrease in landline telephone call minutes in Germany compared to the previous year.

Landline telephony is declining because more and more people are choosing to make calls at home using their mobile phones," explains Marc Albers, head of consumer business at Vodafone Germany. Albers attributes the decline to several factors: firstly, voice telephony is increasingly included in mobile phone tariffs at no additional cost, and secondly, mobile phone signals now reach the interiors of buildings due to the advanced expansion of mobile networks. "And finally, we are also making more calls via data services like WhatsApp and others, because fixed-line internet is becoming ever better," adds Albers.

These developments illustrate that the transformation in the telecommunications landscape continues to progress and that traditional landline telephones are increasingly losing significance. The advantages of mobile technology and the rising usage of internet-based communication services contribute significantly to this change.
