In 2023, battery electric vehicle (BEV) manufacturers in the USA achieved a brilliant result. Despite the current market situation with higher interest rates and decreasing prices for used electric vehicles, Cox Automotive reported that in the fourth quarter alone, 317,168 purely electrically powered vehicles were sold - an impressive increase of 40 percent compared to the previous year.

In the third quarter, sales of electric cars were still at 313,086. And also for the whole year, a strong increase of 46 percent could be recorded, with a total of nearly 1.19 million sold BEVs - for the first time, the million mark was surpassed.

However, it must be noted that this growth has decreased by 20 percentage points compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the market share of BEVs in the fourth quarter can be increased by 7 to 8 percent, which represents a 2 percent increase compared to the previous year. In total, 8 percent of all newly sold cars were purely battery-electric.

Tesla remains the undisputed market leader in the fourth quarter of 2023. The company, led by Elon Musk, sold 23 percent more vehicles compared to the previous year, with a total of 161,385 units. This meant a market share of 51 percent, an increase of 1 percentage point compared to the third quarter. However, compared to the previous year, the market share of the pioneer increased by 8 percentage points. In the fourth quarter of 2022, Tesla's market share was still at 59 percent.
