Air France-KLM has announced that the company expects significant financial losses due to the lack of bookings for travel to Paris during the Olympic Games. The traffic to and from Paris lags behind other major European cities, the airline group said in a statement on Monday.

According to Air France-KLM, international markets are showing significant hesitancy in booking trips to Paris. These trends are reflected in the booking patterns of both Air France and the low-cost airline Transavia. French vacationers appear to be postponing their holidays until after the games or planning alternative trips. Additionally, the company points to data from the Paris Tourist Office, which forecasts a decline in hotel bookings for the summer.

Between June and August, Air France-KLM expects a negative impact on revenues amounting to 160 to 180 million euros. Analysts at Bernstein estimate that this represents a reduction of 13 percent in the consensus pre-tax profit of 1.35 billion euros for this year.

Here is the translated heading in English:

"After the Olympic Games, the company expects a normalization of travel to and from France, with encouraging demand levels for late August and September. Despite warnings from Air France-KLM that travel to Paris is slowing, tourism authorities predict that 15 million visitors will attend the Games.

The airline's shares fell by 2.5 percent by midday trading.

Surveys show that half of Paris' population plans to temporarily leave the city during the Games. A minister of the French government has even urged the population to work from home or visit other places to avoid traffic jams. Additionally, there are signs of an oversupply of accommodations during the Games, with a flood of Airbnb listings driving prices down.

Neil Glynn, an analyst at the research firm Air Control Tower, notes that the aftermath of strikes and disruptions at the beginning of the year is likely to also burden the second-quarter results for the European main competitor Lufthansa. He added that various factors at Air France-KLM and Lufthansa are raising similar expectations of disappointing revenues, which raises questions about whether, in addition to the Olympic Games and strike actions, a general market weakness is also playing a role.
