Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is expanding its autonomous ride-hailing service areas in San Francisco and Los Angeles. This comes in response to growing customer demand for these innovative services. The new areas include Daly City, Broadmoor, and Colma in San Francisco, while the additions in Los Angeles consist of Marina del Rey, Mar Vista, Playa Vista, and parts of Hollywood, Chinatown, and Westwood. The announcement comes amid considerable investments by competitors like General Motors and Amazon.com's Zoox in driverless vehicles to achieve commercial success, despite ongoing stringent regulatory scrutiny. Alphabet plans to invest five billion dollars in Waymo over the next few years, as announced last month by CFO Ruth Porat. This investment aims to drive the growth of the self-driving unit and support its expansion plans. Last month, Waymo eliminated waitlists in San Francisco and made the Waymo One service accessible to the general public, roughly four years after a similar move in Phoenix, Arizona. This initiative reflects the company's confidence in the advancement of autonomous driving technologies. Several technology companies have high hopes for the potential of autonomous driving systems, despite the significant costs and lengthy lead times required to generate substantial revenues. Uber reported that rides in self-driving vehicles were six times higher in the second quarter, attributed to collaborations with companies like Waymo for ride-sharing and food deliveries. Additionally, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is increasingly focusing on artificial intelligence, autonomous driving software, robotaxis, and a humanoid robot named Optimus to counteract a decline in electric vehicle sales, which constitute about 78% of the company’s quarterly revenue.
