The American retail giant Walmart presents a forward-looking retail strategy that includes the use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), generative AI (genAI), augmented reality (AR), and immersive commerce. The aim of these measures is to create highly personalized, convenient, and engaging shopping experiences in its stores, Sam's Clubs, apps, and virtual platforms. At the center of this initiative is the introduction of Wallaby, a specially developed GenAI platform. This platform utilizes large language-specific models to create customized experiences and enable seamless interactions within the Walmart ecosystem. Additionally, a content decision aid has been developed, supported by AI, to curate individualized shopping experiences. Walmart is already using this technology in selected areas on its website to generate a unique homepage for each customer. The expansion of this personalized online shopping experience is planned for the USA by the end of 2025 and is set to be introduced later in the international markets of Canada and Mexico. Furthermore, Walmart has developed an AR platform called Retina, which generates thousands of 3D assets, thereby transforming the shopping experience into innovative virtual social spaces. Suresh Kumar, Global Chief Technology Officer and Chief Development Officer at Walmart, emphasizes the need to move away from traditional search functions and instead use technology to individually address the needs of customers. Additionally, in September 2024, Walmart introduced Caroline's Carts in several states to provide an inclusive and barrier-free shopping experience.
