In a surprising decision, Dutch team captain Virgil van Dijk has opted not to travel with his national team for the upcoming Nations League match against Germany. The central defender, who received a red card in the match against Hungary, decided after a lengthy discussion with the Dutch football association to instead take additional rest time at home in Liverpool to prepare for a demanding phase of games with his club. Although the 33-year-old initially announced his intention to support his team despite being suspended, he changed his decision and flew back to Liverpool on Saturday. This means that the NL team will be missing both the physical presence and moral support of their captain during the game against Germany, who has already played 77 international matches in his national team career. Next month, Liverpool faces a challenging schedule: matchups with well-known teams such as Chelsea, RB Leipzig, Arsenal, and a double confrontation with Brighton & Hove Albion await the team. Van Dijk, known for his leadership strength and influence on the field, is now focusing on these upcoming challenges. The Dutch association stated that no replacement player will be nominated for Van Dijk and that the national team traveled to Munich without him on Saturday.
