Tyus Jones, a veteran at the point guard position, demonstrated impressively last season how he can enhance the Phoenix Suns. A notable example was during the fourth quarter of a game between the Washington Wizards and the Miami Heat. Although he did nothing extraordinary, Jones kept his team organized and moved the ball where it was needed. With Miami leading, he made a pass to Kyle Kuzma, initiating a significant scoring run. Jones skillfully utilized his teammates and showcased his playmaking ability without scoring outstanding points himself. His statistical performance was impressive: 12 points, 16 assists, six of which came in the decisive fourth quarter — without any turnovers. The Phoenix Suns, who had a star-studded yet unbalanced last season, could use exactly this kind of playmaker to start the second season of the era with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal successfully. Since the departure of Chris Paul, the question of needing a traditional point guard has never been more relevant. While many teams are leaning towards positionless basketball, Jones could be the key to the Suns’ success. General Manager James Jones has acted strategically and signed Monte Morris on July 5, a solid backup point guard for the Suns. Interestingly, Tyus Jones also signed a one-year, three-million-dollar contract over the weekend. Known as one of the best backup point guards, Jones had a career-high last year in points, assists, and three-point shooting percentage. Jones is planned to operate in a guard-heavy starting five that includes Booker, Beal, Durant, and center Jusuf Nurkić. Beal, who struggled with his form last season, could particularly benefit from Jones' presence. He has the potential to improve his performance and take on a significant role in the team. Former Suns coach Frank Vogel highlighted the need for better passing skills in the team after a late-season loss to the Sacramento Kings. The well-documented issues the Suns have with turnovers and passing accuracy could potentially be resolved with Jones and Morris. Both players boast an outstanding assist-to-turnover ratio, with Jones even holding a historic best of 7.35. Much has been discussed regarding Beal’s possible role, but Jones' signing should put an end to these speculations. Grayson Allen, the best three-point shooter from last season, is the better choice for the bench. He and Royce O'Neale, both with new contracts, will play important roles. The Suns still have some areas to address, particularly in defense and wing size. However, the addition of Jones brings the opportunity to fully exploit the team’s offensive potential and challenge the competition in the West.
