Supersonic Bomber Loss: Between Technical Malfunction and Claims of Being Shot Down

Eulerpool News·

The military confrontations between Russia and Ukraine once again paint a picture of the uncertainties and controversies that characterize conflict zones of this nature. A Russian Tupolev Tu-22M3 supersonic bomber recently crashed, opening a new chapter in the information and propaganda battle. While Moscow cites technical failure as the cause for the loss of the long-range bomber, Ukraine claims to have shot it down. The crash of the aircraft, known for its ability to reach remote targets, occurred in the southern Stavropol region after completing a combat mission, according to reports from Russia. It is reported that all four crew members rescued themselves using ejection seats, with three already recovered, and the search for the fourth continues. Interestingly, Moscow emphasized that the bomber was not carrying any munitions at the time of the crash. Videos published on social media, yet unverified, allegedly show the moments of the disaster, featuring dramatic footage of the burning airplane. On the other hand, Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk claims that his forces' missile interception capabilities are mature and that they have now managed to down such an aircraft with a missile attack. The Ukrainian side reports that several Tu-22M3s were used during the night-time attack, launching a total of six Kh-22 cruise missiles from their positions over the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov onto Ukrainian territory. Of these six projectiles, two were reportedly intercepted by Ukrainian defense. The reported crash site in Stavropol is about 600 kilometers away from the actual conflict front. In summary, Ukraine states that during the incident in question, 22 various missiles and cruise missiles came towards their defense systems, and 15 of those were destroyed. Furthermore, they were able to intercept all 14 attacking combat drones, thus claiming a significant success for their air defense strategy.
