The social security systems are known to be subject to constant change; however, the year 2025 brings with it two significant changes that will affect a substantial portion of recipients. Even for those not currently receiving benefits, these adjustments could be important for their future retirement plans. Fortunately, all recipients can look forward to an increase in their monthly benefits in 2025. This increase is the result of the yearly cost adjustment according to living expenses, which aims to ensure that the real values of the benefits keep pace with living costs. Starting in January 2025, the monthly benefits will increase by 2.5 percent. Although this adjustment is below the average since the annual adjustment was introduced in 1975, it is still more positive than years without any increase. The calculation of the annual adjustment is based on inflation data from the months of July through September of the previous year, which also suggests that inflation was not as high as in recent years. Another significant change concerns the wage base limit up to which social security contributions must be made. This limit will rise to 176,100 USD in 2025, compared to 168,600 USD in 2024. This adjustment means that a higher portion of some employees' incomes will be subject to social security contributions, which could represent an increased burden for some workers.
