Amid ongoing tensions in Syria and a series of Israeli airstrikes, the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, emphasized that his forces were not seeking new conflicts. Despite his harsh judgment on Israel's 'flimsy' justifications for their recent military campaign, Jolani called for a focus on rebuilding the war-torn country. His statements appeared in an interview with opposition-affiliated Syria TV.
In recent days, Israel has intensified military operations to occupy territories in Syria. These developments challenge Jolani to use his newly gained power to stabilize the country. Jolani, who has also recently become known by his birth name Ahmed al-Sharea, urged the international community to intervene to protect Syrian sovereignty and emphasized the priority of meeting the people's basic needs.
The Chief of Staff of the Israeli military, Herzi Halevi, justified the measures as a prevention against militant groups and assured that no permanent presence was sought. Nevertheless, Jolani sees the potential for escalations and highlights the need for diplomatic solutions.
Israel also plans to double the population of the Golan Heights, which faces international resistance. Countries like Jordan and Egypt have already demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces. The stance of other nations towards HTS is beginning to change. Discussions with prominent representatives from Saudi Arabia, Europe, and the USA, who had indirect contact with HTS, pave the way for possible future cooperation.
Experts warn, however, that HTS's former connection to al-Qaida could limit its international scope. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, however, signaled a possible easing of restrictions.
Meanwhile, Turkish forces are ready to collaborate with the new Syrian government, should support be requested. The Turkish government, which traditionally supports the Syrian rebels, continues to pursue the elimination of Kurdish militias, which it considers an extension of the Kurdish PKK.
