Ratan Tata, one of India's most internationally recognized business pioneers, has passed away at the age of 86. As the head of the Tata Group, a vast conglomerate spanning from salt production to the software industry, he led the company for over two decades. The group, founded by Jamsetji Tata, a pioneer of the Indian economy, managed to employ more than 660,000 people and generate annual revenues of over $100 billion. The company's philosophy is rooted in the idea of combining capitalism with philanthropy, as Peter Casey explains in his work "The Story of Tata." The holding company Tata Sons consists of several firms, fundamentally held by a philanthropic trust. Ratan Tata, hailing from an influential Parsi family, studied architecture in the USA and later returned to India at his family's request to start his career in the family empire. During his tenure as successor to JRD Tata, who appointed him chairman of the conglomerate despite criticism from other aspirants, Ratan Tata shaped the company's path to becoming a global brand. Significant acquisitions, such as the purchase of Tetley, Corus, and Jaguar and Land Rover, underscore this. However, not everything went smoothly—some projects, particularly in the telecommunications sector, failed. A major setback was the unsuccessful attempt to establish the Tata Nano as the world's most affordable car. Despite challenges such as the devastating Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008, which heavily impacted the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Tata displayed unwavering resolve and compassion. He generously supported the victims' families and played a crucial role in restoring the hotel. His withdrawal from active leadership in the company was not without controversy, as he briefly returned as interim chairman in 2016. Nonetheless, Ratan Tata remains remembered as a humble and charismatic visionary who consistently anchored values of equality and humility in his actions.
