The shares of IonQ, a pioneer in the field of quantum computing, are currently causing a stir on Wall Street. By December 11 of this year, the stock had gained an impressive 143%, with a 289% increase in just the last three months. This development highlights the growing importance of quantum computing. Apart from micro-stocks, four of the ten biggest winners in the last quarter have specialized in hardware for quantum computers. Both investors and technology enthusiasts have high expectations for the future of this technology. With a market capitalization of $6.5 billion, IonQ is considered the largest pure investment opportunity in this sector. However, can the once-small company secure enormous long-term gains for its early investors? In simple terms, quantum computers could one day solve problems that current digital computers find insurmountable. Unlike conventional computers that rely on predictable logical circuits, quantum computers operate using probabilistic methods of quantum mechanics. While they are still at a disadvantage for tasks requiring mathematical precision, they promise to fundamentally optimize complex real-world systems. Application areas include genomics research, cryptography, weather forecasting, and AI development. While the disruptive potential of this technology still lies in the future, some companies are already celebrating initial technical successes. One such success was recently announced by Google, a subsidiary of the tech giant Alphabet. Their quantum computer with 100 so-called qubits was able to perform simple error corrections in a fault-prone project. This error correction represents an important advancement, albeit a small one. Google predicts that quantum computers will only offer commercially useful error corrections with systems of at least 10,000 qubits. Modern Financial Markets Data
