In a remarkable move, Chrystia Freeland announced her resignation as Canada's Finance Minister on Monday, just hours before she was scheduled to present a new financial update in the House of Commons. The reason: differences with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding Canada's future economic course. Despite the prospect of another role in the cabinet, she decided to leave the government, though she remains politically active and plans to run in the upcoming elections.
In a letter to Trudeau published on X, Freeland stated that the Prime Minister informed her on Friday that she was no longer desired as Finance Minister. After careful consideration, she concluded that resignation was the only honest and viable solution. She emphasized that a minister can only work effectively if they speak on behalf of the Prime Minister and enjoy his full confidence, which apparently was no longer extended to her.
Freeland noted that there are differing views on the best path for Canada's future, particularly regarding the economic challenges posed by the looming 25-percent U.S. tariff on Canadian exports. In her view, it is crucial to preserve financial reserves to prepare for a potential tariff war, rather than adopting costly policy measures that could undermine Canadians' confidence in the government.
Although Freeland did not specify any particular "costly policy measures" she criticized in her resignation letter, the temporary waiver of the federal sales tax on various consumer goods, such as toys and restaurant visits, coincided precisely with the weekend. Tensions between Freeland and the Prime Minister's Office regarding financial policy had been speculated upon beforehand, especially concerning the waived tax reduction and the planned $250 rebates for working Canadians with an income under $150,000.
