The international business world has lost one of its most distinctive voices: Thomas J. Donohue, former CEO and President of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, has passed away at the age of 86. Donohue, a tireless advocate for the business community, remained an influential figure until the end. From 1984 to 1997, Donohue led the ATA and significantly shaped the organization's work. He was known for his passionate advocacy for businesses and his recognized leadership qualities. Chris Spear, current President and CEO of the ATA, states: "Tom was not only a powerful advocate but also a personal mentor and friend." In 1997, Donohue took over the leadership of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which he held until his retirement in 2021. During this time, he fundamentally transformed the organization and made it a globally influential player. The transformation under his leadership was "not mere lip service, but a true transformation," praised the Chamber. Born in New York City, Donohue earned his degrees from St. John's University and Adelphi University. In addition to his work for the Chamber, he was also involved in various other economic and academic institutions. Jay Timmons, President and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers, commended his achievements and added that Donohue's dedication positively impacted the lives of many Americans.
