The British operators of the electricity and gas networks look forward to the cold season with confidence, as both the availability of energy imports and domestic production have improved compared to the previous year. Thanks to high gas storage levels in Europe, the National Energy System Operator (NESO) and National Gas anticipate a stable energy flow. Craig Dyke of NESO emphasizes that the outlook for power reserves this winter is the most positive since 2019/20. The forecasted security reserve is now 5.2 gigawatts, which corresponds to 8.8% of the peak demand during an average cold period. This value has been achieved through extended connections to Europe, including a new 1.4 GW line to Denmark. Although wholesale energy prices have stabilized since the peaks in 2022, the possibility of geopolitical influences remains a risk. However, the system is generally more resilient, with geopolitical events potentially continuing to play a role. National Gas expects a similar peak power demand as last year and anticipates a peak gas demand of 474 million cubic meters daily. Thanks to solid supplies from Norway, imports of liquefied natural gas, and nearly full gas storage facilities in Europe, gas reserves are sufficient. Despite tensions in the Middle East, global developments are being closely monitored, as external factors such as weather and market prices can influence the situation.
