The British regulator Ofcom has proposed ending the delivery of second-class mail on Saturdays. According to Ofcom, people mainly need weekend delivery for sending 'occasionally urgent letters or cards.' For these urgent items, however, most people would choose a first-class stamp. Most letters are not urgent anyway, said the regulator. Ofcom argues that discontinuing second-class Saturday delivery could help Royal Mail improve reliability, achieve significant efficiency gains, and redirect existing resources to growth areas such as parcel delivery. To comprehensively consider the opinions of postal users, Ofcom plans to conduct further in-depth research. This adjustment could be implemented without legislative changes.
