The semiconductor giant Nvidia has released its results for the second quarter, surpassing expectations for both revenue and profit. The company, widely recognized as a market leader in artificial intelligence, reported earnings per share of $0.68 on revenue of $26.3 billion. Analysts had expected earnings of $0.64 per share and revenue of $28.8 billion. Compared to the previous year, when Nvidia posted earnings per share of $0.27 and revenue of $13.5 billion, this represents an impressive increase. Furthermore, the company forecasts revenue of $32.5 billion, plus or minus two percent, for the third quarter—another target that exceeds analysts' expectations of $31.9 billion. Despite this positive news, the company’s stock price fell by six percent following the announcement. The majority of the revenue comes from the significant datacenter business, which generated $26.3 billion last quarter, surpassing expectations of $25 billion. In the same quarter of the previous year, this revenue was $10.3 billion. According to Reuters, Nvidia holds a global market share of 80% to 95% in AI chip development and software. With the introduction of the new Blackwell chip series, the company is expected to further solidify its leading position. However, competitive pressure remains. Earlier this month, AMD announced the acquisition of ZT Systems in a deal valued at $4.9 billion. This acquisition aims to enhance AMD's capabilities in the AI system server domain, a sector that has significantly contributed to Nvidia's revenue growth. Nevertheless, Stifel Managing Director Ruben Roy does not see an immediate threat to Nvidia's dominance: “There are emerging competitors like AMD, which are beginning to capture market share. But looking at the entire investment cycle in infrastructure, which is expected to continue growing, Nvidia seems best positioned to benefit from it.”
