The Columbus Blue Jackets have introduced former Minnesota Wild coach Dean Evason as their new head coach. This move is in response to General Manager Don Waddell's acknowledgment of the team's clear demands for stronger leadership. Waddell, who has been in his position only since the end of May, dismissed Pascal Vincent after just three weeks and one season as coach to hand over the reins to Evason. "What Dean really brings is passion, structure, and a process that holds players accountable," Waddell explained at a press conference. "Our organization, wanting to take the next step, requires exactly these qualities." Evason, who will turn 60 next month, is known in the NHL for his high standards and ability to motivate players. His background as a player (803 games and 1,002 penalty minutes) and as a coach reflects the assertiveness that Columbus urgently needs. "I don’t know the past of this team in detail, but on paper it looks fantastic. Our job is to get the best out of the players," Evason said. "We will work hard, and I am sure that will happen quickly." Evason’s arrival was eagerly anticipated by both players and colleagues. Particularly enthusiastic was Zach Werenski, defenseman for the Blue Jackets: "Everyone who has played under him speaks very positively of him. He expects a lot, and that’s exactly what we need." The recruitment process for the new coach was intense. Other candidates included Todd McLellan and Jay Woodcroft, the latter making it to the final selection. Waddell worked closely with his team to ensure the right decision was made. Evason plans to talk to each player in the coming weeks and to meet with some veterans personally. Additionally, he will be setting up his coaching staff, with assistant coaches Jared Boll, Steve McCarthy, and Mark Recchi already under contract until 2024-25. The Blue Jackets will begin their training camp in mid-September and start the season on October 10 against Evason’s former team, the Minnesota Wild. "Of course, this game means something," Evason said. "It’s important to me to start with a win.
