In a remarkable turn of events in one of the most well-known cases in British retail, new allegations have emerged against the late Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed. A total of forty new allegations from various individuals have been received by the Metropolitan Police in London, involving serious accusations, including rape and sexual assault, occurring between 1979 and 2013. These new revelations add to 21 existing allegations against the entrepreneur, who passed away last year, and were recorded between 2005 and 2023, yet were not pursued by the prosecution. Following the broadcast of a BBC documentary last month that highlighted alleged crimes against former Harrods employees, the development gained new momentum. According to statements from Stephen Clayman, Commander of the Metropolitan Police, investigators have received valuable information since the broadcast, mostly about Al Fayed, but also about other individuals. Despite his passing, the police continue to assess whether criminal proceedings can be initiated against other involved parties. Significantly, the police had previously presented extensive evidence to the prosecution, yet no further action was taken against Al Fayed. The response to the BBC coverage has been tremendous, as 65 women have contacted the broadcaster to report assaults, some even dating back before Al Fayed's acquisition of Harrods. The latest allegations further tarnish the reputation of the department store, sold in 2010, as it is accused of having covered up past incidents. Harrods has since acknowledged its responsibility and settled with the majority of those affected. Police and lawyers remain in close contact to ensure that all potential criminal acts can be documented. These new developments shed additional light on a scandal that not only overshadows Mohamed Al Fayed’s past but also raises questions about corporate responsibility.
