Meta warns of a Russian flood of fake accounts on social networks

In the digital chess game of international influence, Russia is changing its tactics. The social media giant Meta reports that since the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine, a flood of not particularly covert and often short-lived fake accounts is being used, instead of complex and credible profiles, with the declared goal of undermining Western support for Ukraine. This development might become particularly pronounced during the European elections and the upcoming presidential election in the USA, when discourses around the Ukraine conflict represent political capital during election times. Ben Nimmo, an expert at Meta, points out that such campaigns are losing effectiveness as they reach only a few followers. However, there is still the danger that the spread of such information by recognized personalities – whether politicians, journalists, or influencers – could inadvertently give these manipulative efforts more reach and credibility. The concerning role of European surveillance service providers, especially from Italy, promoting their surveillance services for spying on journalists, activists, and dissidents in countries like Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia, is also not to be overlooked. These uses of artificial intelligence generated fake profile images on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, to make inconspicuous contact with the targets. Meta manager David Agranovich is calling on European data protection authorities to use their powers to enforce strict data protection regulations against such practices.
