Meta Platforms has announced that it will educate Brazilian users about the use of their personal data for training generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). This information follows a demand from Brazil's national data protection authority. Starting today, users in Brazil will be informed via email as well as notifications on Facebook and Instagram, and will be given the option to opt-out of the use of their data for AI training. The decision of the Brazilian data protection authority, which in July had suspended Meta's new privacy policy on the use of personal data for AI training, was lifted last Friday after Meta agreed to provide the relevant information. In July, Meta also actively suspended the use of generative AI tools in Brazil, including tools for creating popular AI stickers for the messaging platform WhatsApp. Brazil represents the second largest user base for WhatsApp. At that time, Meta stated that the tools were temporarily suspended while they negotiated with the data protection authority over their concerns regarding the use of generative AI. When asked by Reuters whether Meta would resume the use of the tools following the lifting of the suspension by the data protection authority, the company reaffirmed only that the suspension had occurred while they were in discussions with the authority.
