The United States and Philippine armed forces have commenced large-scale joint exercises conducted alongside major allies in various regions of the Philippines. The exercises span areas bordering both Taiwan and the South China Sea. These maneuvers, set to last until October 25, follow Chinese military exercises around Taiwan that were sharply criticized by both the Taipei government and Washington. Over 2,000 American and Philippine soldiers will participate in the exercises, which include amphibious landings, live-fire drills, and humanitarian assistance efforts. Allies such as the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, and South Korea are also involved, with concurrent joint naval exercises taking place off the coast of North Luzon. These military exercises are named KAMANDAG, an acronym for "Cooperation of the Warriors of the Sea." Major General Arturo Rojas, commander of the Philippine Marine Corps, emphasized at the opening that KAMANDAG goes beyond defense. It is about building trust, promoting collaboration, and strengthening partnerships to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. Rojas further highlighted that the exercises reflect the close relationships between the Philippines and its allies and demonstrate the collective resolve to safeguard peace and stability in the region. The Philippines and the United States have been bound by a mutual defense treaty for over seven decades and have been conducting joint exercises for decades.
