A historic shift is emerging in British politics: Keir Starmer is on the verge of becoming the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after an overwhelming election forecast. The exit poll, considered highly reliable and that has accurately predicted the last five British general elections, forecasts a landslide victory for the Labour Party. This forecast suggests that Labour will win an overwhelming majority of seats in the House of Commons, meaning Starmer would replace the incumbent Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has been in office for less than two years. Starmer, a 61-year-old former human rights lawyer, has led the Labour Party through an impressive political transformation. Just a few years ago, the party suffered its worst electoral defeat since the 1930s. Starmer repositioned the party to the political center and skillfully capitalized on the mistakes of three consecutive Conservative Prime Ministers. “He has been consistent — some would say tiresome — in his discipline,” said Jill Rutter, a research fellow at the London think tank “U.K. in a Changing Europe,” recently to the New York Times. “He won’t sweep people off their feet, but he comes across as relatively prime ministerial.” Raised in a left-wing working-class family in Surrey, outside London, Starmer experienced a difficult childhood. His mother, a nurse, suffered from a severe illness. The first in his family to attend university, he studied law at Leeds and later at Oxford. His rise eventually led him to a position as the UK's Director of Public Prosecutions and being knighted. Following his election to Parliament in 2015, he succeeded the left-wing Jeremy Corbyn as party leader in 2020 and immediately began reforming the Labour Party. He moved away from Corbyn's proposals to nationalize the UK's energy industry and pledged not to raise taxes on working families. Additionally, he clearly expressed support for the British military to dispel the unpatriotic image that had plagued Labour during the Corbyn era. Starmer also took decisive action against antisemitism within the party, which had spread under Corbyn's leadership. Although he does not directly link this to his personal life, his wife, Victoria Starmer, comes from a Jewish family in London.
